Apostille for a U.S. marriage certificate

If an overseas authority asks you to prove a marriage celebrated in the United States, it may request an official marriage certificate with an apostille. A marriage license, ceremonial certificate, and certified marriage record can serve different purposes. Ask which document the recipient requires before sending anything for processing.

Which New York certificate do you need?

For a New York City marriage record, ask the City Clerk for the certificate intended for foreign use, commonly called an extended certificate. The New York County Clerk’s instructions require a certified copy bearing the original City Clerk stamp and signature for authentication. The apostille then comes from the New York Department of State.

For records issued elsewhere in New York, the route depends on the issuer. A local clerk’s signature generally needs the appropriate County Clerk certification. Qualifying records issued directly by the New York State Department of Health can follow the state-issued-record route. For another state’s certificate, use that state’s competent authority.

What to check before ordering

  • Is the document a completed marriage record rather than an unused license?
  • Which office issued this particular copy, and whose signature appears on it?
  • Does the foreign recipient require a recently issued record or extended information?
  • Must names be translated or transliterated in a particular way?
  • Is an apostille actually required for this country and purpose?

The foreign recipient or an appropriate professional should answer substantive questions about recognition of the marriage, a name change, or citizenship. I check the practical submission route and required certifications; I do not decide those legal questions.

Originals, timing, and delivery

You obtain the official certificate yourself. My service starts with the document you supply and does not include retrieving a new marriage record. An eligible, fully prepared NYC record may qualify for Manhattan rush handling; ordering the record itself can take additional time. Mail requests and other-state documents receive a separate timing assessment.

See apostille service options for standard processing, rush eligibility, delivery, and community assistance. A scan is useful for review but normally does not replace the official paper certificate required for submission.

Upload a copy securely or contact me with the issuing office, destination country, and deadline. Do not send originals until we agree on the route and mailing instructions.
