An affidavit is a written statement that a signer swears or affirms is true. It often uses a jurat: the signer appears before the notary, takes an oath or affirmation, and signs as the certificate requires.
The notary does not decide whether your statement is complete or legally sufficient. Bring the final document prepared by you or an authorized professional, along with the recipient’s instructions.
Before the appointment
- Confirm that the document calls for a jurat or another sworn procedure.
- Do not sign early when the signature must be made in the notary’s presence.
- Bring acceptable, unexpired identification.
- Arrange any required witnesses.
- Ask whether the recipient accepts a New York electronic notarization if you plan to meet online.
During the appointment, I verify identity, administer the oath or affirmation, witness the required signature, and complete the notarial certificate. I do not verify that every factual statement in the affidavit is true.
