In an acknowledgment, the signer appears before the notary, is identified, and confirms that the signature is theirs and that they signed for the purpose and in the capacity stated in the document.
Unlike a jurat, an acknowledgment does not require a promise that the document’s statements are true. The signature may have been made before the appointment, but the signer must still personally appear and acknowledge it.
What happens
- I review the certificate and identify the signer.
- The signer confirms the signature and execution of the document.
- I complete the acknowledgment certificate.
I do not verify the document’s legal effect, ownership claims, authority beyond the notarial procedure, or whether the recipient will accept it.
