Some organizations ask a translator to sign a certification or affidavit stating that the translation is complete and accurate. If notarization is requested, the notarial act applies to the translator’s signature or oath—not to the translation itself.
I do not compare the two documents, evaluate the translator’s skill, certify the translation, or promise that the recipient will accept it.
Before the appointment
- Ask the receiving organization for its required wording.
- Confirm whether it wants an acknowledgment, jurat, or another act.
- Prepare the translator’s statement in final form.
- Do not sign early if the signature must be witnessed.
- Bring acceptable identification.
- Ask whether an electronic notarization is accepted.
